Boston, MA – The National Weather Service has issued widespread Gale Warnings along the East Coast from Maine to Virginia, with powerful winds and rough seas expected to peak Friday through Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Boston, Caribou, Mount Holly, Wakefield, and Baltimore/Washington, mariners can expect west to northwest winds reaching 35–45 knots and seas between 10 and 20 feet in several offshore and coastal zones.
In Maine, a Gale Warning takes effect 6 p.m. Friday through Saturday evening from Eastport to Stonington, where gusts may reach 45 knots and seas build to 14 feet.
Meanwhile, Lake Ontario and Chesapeake Bay are forecast to experience waves of 12–16 feet and gusts up to 40 knots, making for extremely hazardous navigation conditions.
Further south, the New Jersey and Delaware coastal waters are expected to see gusts near 45 knots and seas as high as 13 feet starting early Friday morning, while Massachusetts and Rhode Island Sound could see waves up to 12 feet by midday.
Forecasters warn that strong winds could capsize small vessels, reduce visibility, and make coastal navigation dangerous. Mariners are advised to delay travel, secure vessels, and remain in safe harbor until the warnings expire late Saturday.
This storm system follows a series of late-October low-pressure disturbances moving up the Atlantic coast, bringing rough seas and shifting winds from southeast to northwest as it passes.
