Boston, MA – Triple-digit heat index values could blanket much of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and northern Connecticut through Friday evening, prompting an urgent Heat Advisory for millions.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston, heat index values will climb to 95°F on Thursday and spike as high as 103°F by Friday afternoon, especially in metro areas like Boston, Worcester, Hartford, and Providence. The advisory remains in effect from 11 a.m. Thursday until 8 p.m. Friday.
The combination of high humidity and temperatures in the 90s could trigger heat exhaustion or heat stroke for anyone outdoors too long without adequate hydration or shade. Vulnerable groups — including the elderly, children, and outdoor workers — are at highest risk. Officials urge residents to limit outdoor activity, check on neighbors, and use air conditioning where possible.
In Boston, city-run cooling centers are open today and Friday. In Worcester and Lowell, local libraries and senior centers are offering extended hours. Rhode Island’s Kent and Providence counties are under the same alert, with temperatures pushing into the mid-90s by Friday morning.
Stay indoors during peak heat hours (1–5 p.m.), drink water regularly, and avoid strenuous activities. Heat alerts may extend into the weekend if conditions persist.
