Boston, MA – A sweltering heat wave continues to grip Southern New England through 8 p.m. Wednesday, with heat indices climbing above 100°F in cities like Providence, Hartford, and Springfield.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston, a Heat Advisory remains in effect for most of Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island—excluding the Berkshires and the southern coastline. High temperatures in the 90s, paired with oppressive humidity, are pushing “feels-like” temps into the danger zone of 95 to 100+ degrees.

The prolonged exposure to this level of heat can lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke, particularly for vulnerable populations. In urban centers like Boston and Worcester, where concrete and asphalt retain heat overnight, cooling becomes even more difficult. Residents are urged to stay indoors, use air conditioning if available, and check on elderly neighbors or those without cooling options.

In Hartford, local health officials have opened cooling centers, and Providence schools have announced early dismissals through Wednesday. Public works departments across the region are also monitoring heat-related stress on road crews and infrastructure.

The heat advisory will expire Wednesday evening, but forecasters warn another round of hot weather could follow later this week. Stay updated with local alerts and continue taking precautions to avoid heat-related illness.
