Boston, MA – Triple-digit heat index values are set to grip much of Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island starting Sunday, prompting a multi-day Extreme Heat Warning that will last through 8 p.m. Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston, temperatures combined with high humidity will push the heat index as high as 108°F across major population centers including Boston, Worcester, Hartford, and Providence. The warning covers all of northern Connecticut, nearly all of Massachusetts, and both northern and southern Rhode Island.

Communities across Suffolk, Middlesex, Bristol, and Essex counties can expect oppressive heat from late morning Sunday into Tuesday evening. Urban areas are especially vulnerable due to the heat island effect, where concrete and pavement trap heat overnight. Heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke and dehydration are likely without proper precautions.

Residents are urged to stay indoors with air conditioning, remain hydrated, and check on elderly neighbors, children, and pets. Outdoor laborers should take frequent breaks and limit strenuous activity during peak hours (noon to 6 p.m.).

Cooling centers are expected to open across cities like Springfield, Taunton, and Lowell. Local officials recommend using public libraries or malls as temporary cooling shelters if needed.

The heat wave is expected to break by Tuesday night, but additional advisories may follow depending on midweek temperatures.
