Boston, MA – Record-challenging heat is gripping southern New England Tuesday, with triple-digit temperatures and dangerous heat index values prompting Excessive Heat Warnings across Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston, temperatures are expected to reach 100°F to 103°F in cities like Boston, Worcester, Springfield, and Providence. Combined with oppressive humidity, heat index values could soar as high as 110°F through Tuesday evening. Air Quality Alerts are also in effect due to stagnant, ozone-rich air.

In Boston, the high could match the city’s June record of 100°F set in 2021. Worcester and Providence are also flirting with historic benchmarks set in the 1940s and 1950s. Hartford and Springfield are forecast to reach 102°F, while New Haven and Waterbury could hit 101°F. Even coastal spots like Plymouth and New Bedford may top 95°F.

The extreme heat is increasing the risk of heat-related illness, especially for children, seniors, and outdoor workers. Officials urge residents to limit strenuous activity, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Cooling centers are open in several cities, and transit delays are possible due to rail and road surface stress.

Heat warnings remain in effect until at least 8 p.m., with another sweltering day expected Wednesday.
