Portland, Maine – Cold overnight air will settle across northern New England, bringing the first widespread frost of the season to much of Maine, northern New Hampshire, and parts of Vermont early Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Gray, Maine, a Frost Advisory is in effect from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m. Wednesday for Oxford, Franklin, Somerset, York, and Cumberland Highlands counties, along with northern Carroll and Grafton counties in New Hampshire. Temperatures could fall to 30 degrees in valley locations, creating widespread frost that may damage gardens and outdoor plants.
The Burlington, Vermont, weather office has issued a separate advisory for Essex County from 1 a.m. to 7 a.m. Wednesday, where patchy frost is expected as lows dip into the low 30s.
Communities from Rangeley, Maine, to Conway, New Hampshire, and Island Pond, Vermont, should take precautions by covering or bringing in sensitive vegetation. Farmers and gardeners are urged to act before nightfall to prevent crop loss.
While skies remain clear overnight, temperatures are expected to rebound into the upper 50s and low 60s Wednesday afternoon, limiting frost to the early morning hours.
Additional frost advisories may be issued later this week as cooler nights continue across northern New England.
