Burlington, Vt. – A sharp early-season cold snap is set to grip much of New England and northern New York overnight, with temperatures plunging into the upper 20s by Thursday morning under a widespread Freeze Warning.

According to the National Weather Service, the warning covers a broad stretch from Vermont’s Green Mountains into northern New York and parts of western New England, lasting from midnight until 8 a.m. Thursday. Subfreezing temperatures are likely across counties including Rutland, Windsor, Washington, Bennington, and Saratoga, with pockets as cold as 29 degrees. Lewis County, New York, could remain below freezing through 9 a.m.

The cold will end the growing season for many communities. Sensitive vegetation, late-season gardens, and unprotected crops may be lost, while exposed outdoor plumbing faces a freeze risk. Residents are urged to cover tender plants, drain sprinkler systems, and allow faucets to drip to avoid burst pipes.

Cities most at risk include Montpelier, Rutland, Saratoga Springs, Glens Falls, and Bennington. Farmers across the Champlain Valley and into the Berkshires are expected to face significant damage to late-harvest crops.

Cold air lingers into Thursday morning, with conditions warming slightly in the afternoon before another chilly night arrives. Additional advisories may be issued if the freeze pattern continues.
