York Harbor, ME – More than 40,000 residents across New England, including New Hampshire and Massachusetts, reported feeling a magnitude 3.8 earthquakethat struck near the Maine coast on Saturday morning, an unusual seismic event for the region.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred 10 km southeast of York Harbor, Maine, at a depth of 13.2 km at 10:22 a.m. ET (15:22 UTC). The tremor was widely felt across southern Maine, New Hampshire, and northeastern Massachusetts, with residents describing a loud rumble followed by a quick jolt.

While small earthquakes occasionally occur in the Northeast, a quake of this magnitude is rare. The USGS estimates an 11% chance of aftershocks of at least magnitude 3 within the next week, though stronger tremors are unlikely. No significant damage or injuries have been reported.

The earthquake was not strong enough to trigger a tsunami warning, according to the U.S. Tsunami Warning System.

Seismologists note that while New England is not known for frequent earthquakes, the region sits on an ancient fault system capable of producing mild to moderate quakes. Authorities encourage residents to report their experiences to USGS to aid in future seismic research.
