Albany, NY – Drivers across eastern New York, western Massachusetts, and southern Vermont are urged to use caution Tuesday as a widespread wintry mix creates hazardous road conditions during a key holiday travel window.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, Winter Weather Advisories are in effect across the Catskills, Mohawk Valley, Capital Region high terrain, Berkshires, and southern Green Mountains, with impacts lasting from early Tuesday morning through early Wednesday in many locations.

In Western Ulster County, including Woodstock, Ellenville, Kerhonkson, and West Hurley, snow develops before dawn Tuesday with 2 to 5 inches expected. Snow tapers this afternoon, then mixes with patchy freezing drizzle, creating a light glaze of ice before 5 p.m. Gusty winds and additional snow showers are expected late tonight.

Across Hamilton, Fulton, and Herkimer counties, snowfall totals of 3 to 6 inches are forecast, with isolated 7 to 8 inches possible in higher terrain near Old Forge, Long Lake, and Big Moose. Snow continues through the afternoon, then transitions to snow showers and freezing drizzle this evening before winds increase overnight.

The advisory also includes Berkshire County, MA, eastern Rensselaer County, NY, and Bennington and western Windham counties in Vermont, where 2 to 5 inches of snow is expected, with up to 7 to 8 inches along the southern Green Mountains. A light glaze of ice from freezing drizzle may further complicate travel.

Forecasters warn that strong northwest winds after midnight, combined with falling snow, could lead to reduced visibility and difficult travel, especially in higher elevations and exposed areas.

The hazardous conditions may impact both the Tuesday morning and evening commutes, as well as overnight holiday travel. Motorists are advised to slow down, allow extra time, and be alert for rapidly changing road conditions.
