Newark, DE – A 60-year-old Middletown man was killed Saturday morning after a head-on collision triggered a four-car chain-reaction crash on Salem Church Road, according to Delaware State Police. The roadway, located just south of the I-95 overpass, was shut down for about four hours as investigators reconstructed the scene.
According to Delaware State Police, the crash happened around 9:45 a.m. on November 29, 2025, as a line of northbound vehicles—including a Honda Civic, an unidentified vehicle, a Subaru Impreza, and a Hyundai Elantra—traveled on Salem Church Road. At the same time, a Chevrolet Malibu was traveling southbound but was in the northbound lane as it approached the other vehicles.
Investigators say the unknown vehicle allegedly entered the southbound lane to pass the Civic. As that vehicle and the Malibu approached each other, the Malibu swerved back into the southbound lane, then overcorrected and veered into the northbound lane, striking the Civic head-on. The Malibu continued moving and subsequently crashed into the Impreza and then the Elantra.
The Civic’s driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld pending family notification. The Impreza’s driver, a 36-year-old Newark man, and the Elantra’s driver, a 32-year-old Wilmington man, reported no injuries.
The Malibu’s driver, a 21-year-old Dover man, was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The unknown vehicle did not stop and left the scene.
