New Bern, North Carolina – A sharp warm-up is expected across eastern North Carolina after a cold start to the week, with temperatures climbing into the 60s by midweek, according to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City.
The National Weather Service said Sunday and Monday will remain on the cooler side, with highs generally in the 30s and 40s across much of eastern North Carolina. Overnight lows early in the week are expected to dip into the teens and 20s in some inland locations.
Conditions begin to change Tuesday as warmer air moves into the region. Forecast highs are expected to reach the low 60s Tuesday, followed by mid-60s Wednesday across communities including New Bern, Morehead City, Jacksonville, Kinston, and surrounding areas.
According to the weather service, these temperatures are notably warm for early February. The last time Newport reached 60 degrees was January 22, highlighting how unusual this midweek warmth will feel after recent cold conditions.
Motorists traveling along U.S. Highway 70, U.S. Highway 17, U.S. Highway 264, and other major roadways should encounter generally favorable driving conditions through midweek, with dry weather and mild temperatures expected.
The National Weather Service noted that while the early week remains dry, precipitation chances are expected to increase later in the week. A chance of rain is indicated by Wednesday night into Thursday, though specific impacts were not detailed in the update.
For commuters, students, and outdoor workers, the midweek warm-up may provide a noticeable break from winter conditions, especially during afternoon hours.
Residents are encouraged to remain aware of changing conditions later in the week as rain chances return and temperatures adjust.
Additional updates will be provided by the National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City office as the late-week forecast becomes clearer.
