LAS VEGAS — Online retail giant Amazon has announced a holiday hiring surge in Nevada, even as the company continues to cut thousands of jobs globally.
The year-end holidays are the busiest season for shoppers in the U.S. According to Oberlo, holiday retail sales in 2024 were predicted to reach $989 billion. Amazon is getting ready for this year’s rush of Christmas shoppers by hiring 2,500 workers across Nevada.
“These jobs offer competitive pay, flexible schedules, and the opportunity to grow,” said Tareq Wafaie, manager of economic development policy at Amazon. “We are focused on expanding access to good jobs and helping more Nevadans build the future they want.”
According to the retail giant, these seasonal roles pay more than $19 per hour, including benefits. Regular full and part-time employees can earn over $23 per hour. Seasonal role openings are posted every Friday.
The hiring push comes around the same time that Amazon announced it was cutting 14,000 jobs, citing a shift toward artificial intelligence. For some, the seasonal roles may offer an opportunity to transition into full-time positions, which grant access to Amazon’s programs like the Career Choice program.
These seasonal roles are a reflection of the increased buying habits during Christmas and the increased investment in Nevada’s local economy. Since 2010, Amazon has invested more than $17.6 billion in Nevada.
