A winter storm watch is in effect from Friday afternoon through late Sunday night for the Ruby Mountains and East Humboldt Range in Elko County, with heavy snowfall and strong winds expected.

According to the National Weather Service in Elko, up to 38 inches of snow could accumulate in higher elevations, with wind gusts reaching 45 mph. Travel in affected areas may become dangerous or impossible due to snow-covered roads and blowing snow.

Meanwhile, a separate winter weather advisory is in effect for the Lake Tahoe Basin from 4 a.m. Friday through 10 p.m. Saturday above 7,000 feet. The advisory warns of wet snow accumulation between 6 to 12 inches, with up to 20 inches at higher elevations. A winter storm watch follows late Saturday night through Monday, with an additional 1 to 2 feet of snow expected and wind gusts up to 90 mph.

Travelers should prepare for difficult conditions, power outages, and potential road closures. The Nevada and California Departments of Transportation advise checking road conditions before traveling.
