Elko, Nev. – Drivers across central and northeastern Nevada should brace for dangerous crosswinds and reduced visibility on Sunday as powerful wind gusts barrel through the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Elko, a Wind Advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday for White Pine, Humboldt, Nye, Elko, Lander, and Eureka counties. Sustained south to southwest winds between 25 and 35 mph are expected, with gusts reaching up to 55 mph.
Travel along major highways, including U.S. 50, U.S. 93, and I-80 near Winnemucca, could become hazardous—especially for semi-trucks and RVs. Blowing dust may drop visibility to dangerous levels in open areas like Diamond Valley and Garden Pass. Communities such as Ely, Tonopah, Eureka, and Round Mountain should prepare for power flickers and unsecured objects becoming airborne.
Residents are urged to secure patio furniture, trash bins, and outdoor equipment. Those driving high-profile vehicles should delay travel if possible or use extreme caution.
This advisory expires at 8 p.m. Sunday, but similar wind events are possible in the coming days. Stay tuned to the NWS for updates.
