Beatty, Nevada – Snow and gusty winds could create dangerous travel across higher elevations of Esmeralda and central Nye counties beginning Monday morning and lasting through Wednesday evening.

A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for areas above 5,000 feet, including communities near Beatty, Goldfield, Silver Peak and Dyer. Forecasters warn that accumulating snow and blowing winds may make mountain travel hazardous, especially over Lida Summit along Highway 266.

Snow totals between 5 and 10 inches are possible in higher terrain if the storm develops as expected. According to the National Weather Service in Las Vegas, wind gusts could reach 45 mph, leading to reduced visibility and slick conditions on exposed roadways.

Bridges and overpasses will be particularly prone to icing. Whiteout conditions may develop during heavier bursts of snow, making travel treacherous and potentially life-threatening in remote stretches of highway.

Travel over Lida Summit could become difficult at times, especially late Monday into Tuesday when snowfall rates increase. Drivers should anticipate sudden visibility changes and drifting snow across open desert highways.

Residents are urged to delay non-essential travel. If driving is unavoidable, allow extra time, increase following distance and avoid sudden braking or sharp turns. Make sure vehicles are winter-ready and stocked with emergency supplies, including food, water and blankets.
