RENO, Nev. – A sharp early-season system is bringing a mix of valley rain and mountain snow to western Nevada through Wednesday morning, prompting a Winter Weather Advisory for elevations above 6,000 feet. The National Weather Service in Reno warns of slick mountain passes and slushy roads for high-elevation travelers.
According to the agency, snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are expected above 6,000 feet, with isolated pockets up to 6 inches possible near Mount Rose Summit and Donner Pass. Rain began moving across the Reno–Carson–Minden corridor Tuesday afternoon, transitioning to snow at higher elevations overnight.
Drivers using I-80 west of Verdi and U.S. 50 near Spooner Summit should expect reduced visibility and slippery conditions through early Wednesday. Snow levels are forecast to drop as low as 6,000 feet overnight before slowly lifting by mid-morning. Meanwhile, valley communities including Sparks, Gardnerville, and Virginia City will see mainly rain with temperatures in the 40s and 50s.
By Wednesday afternoon, showers will taper off and skies will clear quickly as high pressure builds in. A stretch of sunny, warmer weather will follow from Thursday into the weekend, with highs reaching the upper 60s to low 70s by Saturday.
Residents are urged to allow extra travel time, especially across Sierra routes, and to check tire chains and emergency kits before heading into mountain areas.
