Reno, NV – A series of winter storms will bring high winds, heavy rain, and snow to Nevada starting Sunday morning, impacting travel on major highways like I-580 and Highway 395. Residents should prepare for potential power outages and hazardous driving conditions as the storms intensify.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a High Wind Warning is in effect Sunday from 4 a.m. to 7 p.m. for the Greater Reno area, including Sparks, Carson City, and Minden. Gusts could reach 70 mph in lowland areas, with ridge tops potentially exceeding 100 mph. Drivers on I-580 and Highway 395 should use caution, particularly those in high-profile vehicles.
Heavy rain is forecast for lower elevations Sunday, while snow accumulations of 2 to 6 inches are expected above 6,000 feet in areas like Yuba Pass and Lake Tahoe. Snow levels could rise to 7,300 feet before tapering off Sunday night. Gusty winds will create challenging travel conditions along Sierra passes, including Highway 89 and Highway 70.
Looking ahead, Monday is expected to be mostly sunny with highs near 43°F, offering a brief respite before another system arrives midweek. New Year’s Day will bring partly sunny skies with highs near 49°F, though clouds and cooler temperatures are expected Wednesday.
Residents are urged to secure loose items, stock up on supplies, and monitor updates from the NWS. For road conditions, call 511 or visit the Nevada Department of Transportation’s website.
