Nevada wakes to rattling windows and snapping flags as strong southwest winds sweep across the high desert. Loose debris skitters across roads, and taller vehicles sway with each gust.

A Wind Advisory remains in effect for Reno and surrounding areas until late this afternoon, with sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts reaching 45 to 50 mph. Wind-prone locations could briefly see even stronger bursts. Conditions may change quickly, especially along exposed roadways and open valleys.

Early today, temperatures hover near the upper 50s, unusually mild for December. The warmth does little to ease impacts. High-profile vehicles face difficult travel, particularly along I-80, U.S. 395, and stretches near the Sierra foothills. Drivers should expect sudden crosswinds, reduced vehicle control, and blowing dust at times.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor decorations, trash bins, and holiday displays. Falling tree limbs remain possible, and isolated power outages cannot be ruled out. The winds may also kick up lingering dust and debris from recent dry periods, briefly lowering visibility.

Conditions improve tonight as winds ease and skies partially clear. Thursday turns calmer and brighter, with highs near the low 60s. That break will be brief. By Friday, clouds increase and rain chances return, signaling a more active pattern heading into the weekend.

While snow is not expected in Reno, higher elevations around Lake Tahoe could see winter conditions as temperatures cool late in the week. Travelers heading west should monitor mountain weather closely.

Looking ahead to Christmas Travel weekend, unsettled weather may slow plans. Rain and gusty breezes could return, creating slick roads and slower drives.
