Nevada – Streetlights glisten on damp pavement this morning as clouds thicken over the Las Vegas Valley. The desert feels calm now, but forecasters warn conditions could change quickly as a significant rain event approaches during the busiest travel days of the holiday week.
The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for Las Vegas and much of southern Nevada from late Tuesday night through late Wednesday night. While today stays mostly dry and mild, with highs near 70 degrees, moisture surges into the region Tuesday evening. Rain becomes more widespread after dark, setting the stage for a wet and potentially hazardous Wednesday.
By Wednesday, rain chances reach near 100 percent. Periods of moderate to heavy rainfall may develop, especially during the afternoon and evening hours. Low-lying areas, washes, and poor drainage zones could flood quickly. Travel impacts are possible along I-15, U.S. 95, and surface streets near normally dry washes.
Christmas Eve brings the peak concern. Forecasters warn excessive runoff could flood roads, streams, and urban intersections. Drivers should avoid flooded roadways and never attempt to cross flowing water. Conditions may deteriorate fast after sunset as rain continues into Wednesday night.
Temperatures remain mild, hovering in the low to mid-60s, so snow is not expected in the valley. However, higher terrain north and west of Las Vegas could see heavier precipitation, adding to runoff concerns downstream.
Christmas Day stays unsettled. Rain remains likely through the morning before gradually easing later in the day. Wet roads and reduced visibility could slow holiday travel, especially for those returning home.
This system is a classic early winter reminder for the desert. After weeks of dry weather, the ground struggles to absorb heavy rain. Plan ahead now. Secure travel plans, monitor alerts, and allow extra time Wednesday and Thursday.
