Reno, NV – A quiet and mild start to the week across northern Nevada and the Sierra will give way to a much wetter and windier pattern that stretches into the weekend, according to forecasters.

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, Monday and early Tuesday will remain sunny, dry, and seasonably warm, with valley temperatures climbing into the mid-50s across western Nevada and 40s to near 50 in the Sierra. Morning fog and haze are possible in some valleys due to temperature inversions.

Changes begin Tuesday evening, when increasing winds signal a pattern shift. By Wednesday, moisture returns with rain in valleys and snow confined to the highest elevations, generally above 7,500 to 9,500 feet. Gusty ridge-top winds are expected, along with breezy conditions in lower elevations.

The most impactful period arrives Thursday into Friday, when a stronger system brings widespread rain, gusty winds, and mountain snow. Snow will remain limited to higher terrain, again mainly above 7,000 to 9,000 feet, while valley locations see rain. Winds will be strongest along exposed ridges and mountain passes, with breezy to windy conditions spilling into valleys.

Forecast highs during the wet period cool slightly but remain near seasonal norms, with western Nevada highs in the low-to-mid 50s and Sierra communities in the 40s. Northeast California is expected to see highs in the low-to-mid 50s as well.

While no major flooding concerns are expected at this time, periods of rain could lead to slick roads and reduced visibility, especially during heavier showers. Mountain travel may be impacted at higher passes if snow intensifies.

Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the early-week dry weather to prepare for changing conditions later in the week.
