Nevada – Snowflakes swirl across the Reno-Sparks metro this morning, clinging to windshields and coating roadways just in time for the commute. Gusty winds push snow sideways, reducing visibility in bursts and making travel feel tense before sunrise.
According to the National Weather Service in Reno, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through early morning. Snow accumulations range from a trace to two inches across the valley, with localized bands producing up to four inches. Winds gust as high as 40 mph, causing blowing snow and sudden visibility drops.
Road conditions deteriorate quickly on elevated surfaces. Drivers along I-80, U.S. 395, and city arterials should expect slick patches and brief whiteout conditions under heavier snow bands. Allow extra time and keep speeds down, especially near Sparks, Verdi, and south Reno.
As the morning progresses, snow gradually tapers from west to east. Skies begin to clear by late morning, but cold air lingers. High temperatures struggle into the mid-30s, and melting snow may refreeze in shaded areas. Watch for black ice on bridges and ramps through midday.
Tonight turns sharply colder. Clearing skies allow temperatures to drop into the teens. Any leftover moisture freezes solid, increasing the risk of icy sidewalks and untreated roads by early Friday. Bundle up and protect pets, pipes, and plants from the cold snap.
Friday brings a calmer winter pattern. Sunshine returns, and highs climb near 41. Roads improve, but mornings remain icy. The weekend looks brighter and quieter, with sunny skies and highs in the low to mid-40s Saturday, then near 48 Sunday.
Early next week trends milder, with highs pushing into the 50s by Monday and Tuesday. Winter is far from over, but daylight slowly increases, adding nearly 40 minutes by the end of January.
