Reno, NV – Northern Nevada is bracing for a stormy week as an early fall system brings strong winds, thunderstorms, and even some high mountain snow, according to the National Weather Service Reno.

Forecasters warn the most significant impacts will begin Sunday, Sept. 28, and Monday, Sept. 29, when southwest winds increase, especially Monday. Gusts may exceed 50 mph in parts of western Nevada near and east of Alternate U.S. 95. Showers and thunderstorms are also expected, with the potential for heavy rain, hail, and localized lightning.

According to the NWS, the storm will linger into the middle of the week. Tuesday through Thursday could see the strongest winds on Tuesday, along with widespread showers. Snow levels may drop to elevations near 9,000 feet, bringing the first measurable high-elevation snow of the season. Temperatures during this period are forecast to run 10–15 degrees below normal, making for a much colder start to fall.

Looking ahead to Friday and Saturday, conditions are expected to gradually improve. A slight warming trend will return, though temperatures will remain below seasonal averages. Skies will feature a mix of sun and clouds, with lighter breezes and drier conditions prevailing.

Residents are advised to prepare for hazardous travel conditions, especially in mountain passes where snow and reduced visibility may develop. High winds may also impact driving, particularly for high-profile vehicles, and could lead to localized power outages.

The National Weather Service urges the public to monitor updated forecasts at weather.gov/forecastpoints.
