Nevada – Gray skies hang low over Reno this morning as damp pavement reflects streetlights and traffic signals across the valley. Light rain lingers early on New Year’s Day, keeping temperatures in the upper 30s and reminding drivers that winter conditions are firmly in place as 2026 begins.
According to the National Weather Service in Reno, rain continues through today with highs near 49 degrees. Winds remain light, but persistent moisture and cold air will keep roads slick, especially during the morning and evening travel windows. Visibility may drop at times during steadier rain.
Drivers along I-80, U.S. 395, and surface streets through Reno and Sparks should plan for longer braking distances and reduced visibility. Elevated surfaces may feel colder, and damp roads could turn slick quickly after sunset as temperatures dip toward freezing. Plan extra time if heading out for holiday errands or travel.
Conditions briefly improve Friday with partial clearing and highs near 51 degrees. That break will be short-lived. Rain returns Friday night, then becomes widespread again through the weekend. Snow levels fluctuate between roughly 6,200 and 6,800 feet, keeping valley locations mostly rain, but increasing snow impacts over nearby passes.
By Saturday and Sunday, periods of rain continue with colder nights. Snow levels gradually lower, raising concerns for a rain-snow mix in higher valley neighborhoods and hazardous travel in the Sierra and surrounding foothills. Winter driving conditions may deteriorate quickly after dark.
More advisories could be issued as storms line up across the West. Keep winter gear handy and monitor road conditions closely. Traveling this weekend? Tell us how conditions look where you are.
