Reno, NV – The National Weather Service in Reno has upgraded its High Wind Watch to a High Wind Warning for much of the Sierra region, including Lake Tahoe, Mono County, and the Greater Reno–Carson City–Minden area. The warning is in effect from 1 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday, with major impacts expected across mountain and valley areas.
Forecasters warn of damaging winds reaching 65 mph, with gusts up to 70–80 mph along exposed locations on US-395 and up to 110 mph over Sierra ridgetops. On Lake Tahoe, gusts near 45 mph could produce waves up to 3 to 5 feet, creating hazardous conditions for small watercraft.
Elsewhere across western Nevada and northeast California, a Wind Advisory will be in effect during the same period, with gusts of 55–60 mph and blowing dust possible. The NWS classifies the overall risk level as 4 out of 5 (Major), indicating the potential for power outages, overturned high-profile vehicles, and dangerous travel conditions.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel in high-profile vehicles, and prepare for potential utility disruptions.
