Elko, NV – Residents across northeast Nevada should prepare for chilly mornings this weekend as the first widespread frost of the fall season sets in.
According to the National Weather Service in Elko, minimum temperatures from Friday, October 3, through Tuesday, October 7, are expected to drop into the 20s and 30s across much of Elko County and surrounding valleys. Areas such as Wildhorse, Jackpot, and Pequop Pass may see lows as cold as 27 to 29 degrees on multiple nights, while other rural towns including Spring Creek, Carlin, and Crescent Valley are forecast to dip into the low-30s.
The coldest nights are expected from Saturday through Monday, when many locations will remain below freezing for several hours. Even larger towns like Elko and Ely could see morning temperatures bottom out near 30 degrees, raising the chance of frost and light freezes.
Officials warn that sensitive vegetation, gardens, and outdoor plumbing may be at risk. Residents are encouraged to cover plants, bring in potted flowers, and prepare irrigation systems for freezing conditions.
Daytime highs will remain seasonably cool, generally in the 50s and 60s through the weekend, before a modest warming trend arrives by midweek.
Travelers and ranchers across northern Nevada should also use caution, as early-morning frost may create slick spots on rural highways and ranch roads.
This marks one of the first widespread frost events of the fall season for the Great Basin region.
