Reno, NV – A dangerous combination of gusty winds and low humidity will create critical fire weather conditions across Western Nevada and the Eastern Sierra on Monday. Residents face a heightened risk of rapid fire spread throughout the region. The conditions are expected to develop Monday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno, a Fire Weather Watch is in effect from Monday afternoon through Monday evening. The watch covers a wide area. This includes Carson City, Douglas, Storey, Washoe, and Lyon counties. The Northern Sierra Front and other parts of the Eastern Sierra are also in the watch area.

West winds are expected to blow at 20 to 25 mph. Gusts could reach up to 45 mph. At the same time, humidity levels will drop to between 5 and 15 percent. This combination can cause any new or existing fire to grow in size and intensity very quickly. First responders may struggle to contain fires under these conditions. The NWS warns the threat will last for three to six hours on Monday.

Officials urge residents to be extremely cautious. You should avoid any outdoor activities that could create a spark. This includes yard work with equipment, target shooting, or campfires. It is critical to follow all local fire restrictions. Stay updated on the latest alerts.
