RENO, Nev. – After a bright, mild Columbus Day, northern Nevada faces a sharp cooldown and an increasing chance of showers by Tuesday. The change will end a stretch of calm, sunny weather and bring fall’s first taste of damp, breezy air to the Truckee Meadows and surrounding foothills.

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, highs will climb near 64°F on Sunday and into the upper 50s Monday before a Pacific disturbance pushes inland late Monday night. Showers are expected to develop across western Nevada and along I-580 by Tuesday morning, with gusty south winds and falling temperatures. Areas above 6,200 feet could see early snowflakes, especially along the Sierra Front.

Drivers returning from holiday travel should prepare for wet pavement, reduced visibility, and gusts up to 25 mph during the Tuesday commute. NDOT advises slowing down on mountain passes and securing loose decorations or outdoor gear ahead of the wind shift.

By midweek, cooler air will settle across the region, keeping highs in the lower 50s and lows dipping into the 30s. Sunny breaks return late Wednesday, offering better conditions for fall outings and pumpkin patch visits by Thursday. Residents are urged to check heaters, dress in layers, and protect sensitive plants as overnight lows flirt with frost in valley areas.
