Winnemucca, Nevada – Drivers along Interstate 80 and U.S. 50 could face slick pavement and sudden drops in visibility beginning by 1 p.m. Monday as snow and 55 mph wind gusts move into northern and central Nevada.
According to the National Weather Service in Elko, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 1 p.m. Monday through 10 p.m. Wednesday for Humboldt, Lander, Eureka and northwestern Nye counties. Snow totals are expected to range from 2 to 8 inches, with isolated higher amounts between 5 and 9 inches, especially across higher passes. Strong winds may create blowing and drifting snow, reducing visibility to one mile or less.
Communities including Winnemucca, Battle Mountain, Eureka and Tonopah sit within the advisory zone. Mountain passes such as Emigrant Pass, Hickison Summit and Pinto Summit are particularly vulnerable to snow-packed roads and crosswinds.
Travel impacts are likely during the Monday evening and Tuesday morning commutes. Bridges and overpasses will freeze first, creating patchy ice. Motorists should slow down, increase following distance and check Nevada 511 for the latest road conditions before departure. Gusty winds could also bring down tree branches and create localized hazards. The advisory remains in place through Wednesday night.
