Elko, NV – Drivers across northern and central Nevada should prepare for slick highways and sudden drops in visibility beginning Monday afternoon as snow and gusty winds spread across the state.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Las Vegas and Elko, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Lincoln County from 1 p.m. Monday until 10 a.m. Tuesday above 5,000 feet. Additional advisories begin at 4 p.m. Monday for Humboldt, Lander, Eureka, Elko, White Pine and portions of Nye County, lasting until 10 p.m. Wednesday. Valley locations could see 2 to 5 inches of snow, with 4 to 8 inches above 5,000 feet. Wind gusts may reach 55 mph, creating blowing snow and hazardous travel.
Snow levels will start near 7,000 feet in Lincoln County before dropping below 5,000 feet by Tuesday morning. Along Interstate 80 near Winnemucca, Battle Mountain and Elko, roads may turn snow-covered during heavier bursts. U.S. 93 near Ely, U.S. 50 through Eureka and Highway 95 near Tonopah could see slick stretches, especially late Tuesday into Wednesday.
Bridges and overpasses will freeze first. Officials urge drivers to slow down, increase following distance and check Nevada road conditions by calling 511 before departure. Hazardous travel may intensify ahead of the Wednesday morning commute, and additional snowfall remains possible into midweek.
