Reno, NV – Snow-covered roads and icy bridges are already slowing traffic across the Reno-Carson City area, with heavier bands targeting the Sierra and Tahoe Basin through 10 p.m. Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Reno, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 p.m. PST for western Nevada and the eastern Sierra. In the Reno, Sparks and Carson City areas, 1 to 4 inches of snow is expected below 5,000 feet, with 3 to 6 inches in foothills above 5,000 feet. Localized totals near 8 inches are possible from Washoe Valley to Virginia City where heavier snow bands persist early Thursday.
In the Greater Lake Tahoe Area, 6 to 12 inches is forecast around the basin, with 12 to 18 inches above 7,000 feet and ridge gusts up to 45 mph. Mono County could see 8 to 16 inches along the Sierra crest, with gusts reaching 55 mph on exposed ridges. Lassen and eastern Plumas counties may receive up to 12 inches in higher terrain west of Highway 89.
Interstates 80 and 580, along with Highway 395, may experience chain controls, long delays or temporary closures. Blowing snow could drop visibility to near whiteout conditions at higher elevations.
Drivers should slow down and check 511 before traveling. Snow will taper late tonight, but icy patches may linger into Friday morning.
