Elko, Nevada – Snow and 50 mph wind gusts will begin hitting northern Elko County by 4 p.m. Wednesday, creating dangerous travel conditions before the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Elko, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 4 p.m. Wednesday until 7 p.m. Thursday for northern Elko County, including the Ruby Mountains and East Humboldt Range. Snow totals will vary sharply with elevation. Drivers along Mountain City Highway could see up to 3 inches, while the Jarbidge Wilderness may pick up 7 inches. The highest peaks of the Ruby Mountains and East Humboldt Range could receive as much as 11 inches.
Strong southwest winds gusting to 50 mph will blow snow across open highways, reducing visibility and increasing the risk of drifting. Travel between Elko, Owyhee, Mountain City, Tuscarora and Jarbidge may become difficult, especially after sunset Wednesday and again during the Thursday morning commute.
High-profile vehicles could face crosswind hazards on exposed stretches. Strong gusts may also cause isolated tree damage in mountain communities.
Drivers should slow down, increase following distance and check Nevada 511 for live road conditions. The advisory remains active through Thursday evening, and additional updates may follow if conditions worsen.
