Reno, Nev. – Thunderstorms brewing over Mono County are expected to expand into Alpine, Mineral, and southern Lyon counties this afternoon, bringing a mix of gusty winds, lightning, and brief heavy rainfall that could trigger new fire starts.

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, storm activity will begin around noon and continue through sunset. The highest chances for thunderstorms are within a broad swath covering Mono, Alpine, Mineral, and southern Lyon counties, as marked on weather radar projections.

Residents in these areas should prepare for erratic outflow winds, sudden downpours, and the possibility of lightning-induced fires, especially with ongoing dry conditions. Brief bursts of heavy rain may lead to minor flooding in low-lying areas, while winds could make travel hazardous on local highways such as U.S. 395 and State Route 89.

The National Weather Service urges people in the affected counties to avoid outdoor burning, stay weather-aware, and have emergency plans in place. Fire crews remain on alert for new starts through tonight.

Storm chances diminish after sunset, but additional weather statements may be issued if conditions intensify.
