Reno, Nevada – Winds topping 50 mph and bone-dry air could ignite fast-moving fires across northern Nevada on Sunday as summer weather ramps up. A Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 11 p.m. PDT Sunday, creating dangerous fire conditions from Carson City to Reno and along the I-580 corridor.
According to the National Weather Service in Reno, southwest wind gusts of 30–40 mph — peaking near 50 mph in wind-prone areas — combined with humidity as low as 10%, are making the region highly susceptible to wildfires. Dry thunderstorms are also possible in the Sierra, with a 10–15% chance of erratic, gusty outflows.
Local residents should avoid any outdoor activities that could spark flames, including yard work, target shooting, or campfires. The threat zone includes Carson City, Douglas County, Storey County, Western Lyon, and Southern Mono counties, where fire can spread before crews can respond.
Sunday’s high in Reno will reach 97°F under mostly sunny skies, marking one of the first true summer scorchers of 2025. The dry heat continues Monday with a high near 85°F and calmer winds, offering some relief. But fire danger will remain elevated into early next week.
Five-Day Reno Outlook – June 1–5:
- Sunday: 97°F, wind gusts to 50 mph
- Monday: 85°F, sunny, calmer winds
- Tuesday: 86°F, sunny skies continue
- Wednesday: 85°F, clear and dry
- Thursday: 88°F, warming trend resumes
Smoke from Canadian wildfires may filter in by midweek, reducing visibility and air quality across parts of Nevada and the western U.S.
