LAS VEGAS — Several confirmed laws and policy updates will take effect in Nevada Jan. 1, 2026.

Nevada residents should take note of a slew of new policies and laws coming in the new year, with changes to the health and employment, motor vehicle, and rental sectors. Under changes to the Family and Medical Leave Act, health care providers may charge no more than $30 to complete required paperwork. Nevada has also joined the counseling compact that makes it easier for Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) to practice in other states.

The state is working to promote tenant affordability by requiring landlords to offer at least one rent payment method without extra charges under AB 121. The taxable base wage for unemployment insurance contributions increases from $41,800 to $43,700 next year.

Drivers should make note of harsher penalties for DUI cases that result in death. Governor Joe Lombardo signed Assembly Bill 4 (AB4) after a special legislative session. For drivers with no prior DUI convictions, punishment can include two to 25 years in prison and fines up to $5,000. Drivers with prior convictions face a minimum five-year prison sentence. Certain DMV employees will also be granted powers to inspect vehicles for ownership and possession from next year.

There have been no changes to the minimum wage since July 2024.
