Reno, NV – A portion of Interstate 80 westbound in Reno remains closed following significant flooding that hit the region Sunday night, causing major travel disruptions and prompting state officials to issue urgent warnings to motorists.
According to the Nevada State Police, the closure began around 10 p.m. Sunday between Wells Avenue and Virginia Street after floodwaters overtook the roadway. Emergency crews shut down the westbound lanes as a precaution and urged drivers to steer clear of the area with the repeated message: “Turn around, don’t drown.”
As of Monday morning, I-80 westbound through central Reno remained closed while the Nevada Department of Transportation assessed conditions and worked to determine a timeline for reopening. Drivers are encouraged to check Nevada 511 for real-time updates on closures and detours.
No injuries or vehicle-related incidents have been reported in connection with the flooding. However, state police said the high volume of water made driving dangerous and emphasized that motorists should never attempt to drive through flooded areas.
