Reno, Nevada – A Fire Weather Watch is now in effect from Friday morning through Saturday evening across much of western Nevada and northeast California, as dangerously dry conditions combine with gusty winds to create a heightened risk for fast-moving wildfires.
According to the National Weather Service in Reno, wind gusts up to 40 mph and humidity levels as low as 5% are expected across fire weather zones including Carson City, Douglas County, and Lassen County. Conditions will be most volatile during afternoon hours both days, when winds peak and humidity dips sharply.
Areas under watch include Surprise Valley, Northern Washoe County, the Northern Sierra Front, and the Lahontan Basin. Officials warn that fires could ignite and spread rapidly, especially in regions that saw lightning strikes earlier this week. Southern Washoe County and Churchill County are also within the alert zone.
Residents are urged to avoid spark-prone activities like yard work, target shooting, or campfires. Fire restrictions remain in place, and even small embers could trigger major flare-ups. Overnight humidity recovery will be limited, offering little relief.
The Fire Weather Watch remains in effect through Saturday night, and additional advisories may be issued as conditions evolve.
