Reno, Nevada – Strong winds and bone-dry air could drive rapid fire spread across western Nevada and the Eastern Sierra on Monday, prompting a Fire Weather Watch and elevated wildfire concerns for multiple counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, gusts may reach up to 45 mph on June 16, with relative humidity plunging as low as 7–15%. The alert covers areas including Washoe, Carson City, Douglas, Lyon, Storey, Churchill, and Mineral Counties, as well as portions of Mono County in California. The threat window extends from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. Monday.

Winds and critically dry air will align during peak afternoon heating, increasing the potential for fast-moving wildfires. Officials warn that any new fire starts could spread rapidly, especially in grassy fuels that have dried out after a warm spring.

Residents are urged to avoid open flames, secure outdoor equipment that could spark, and have an evacuation plan ready. Emergency kits and updated communication plans are essential in case evacuation orders are issued.

The risk level is currently rated 3 out of 5 — moderate — but conditions could escalate if fuels dry further. Additional advisories may be issued by early Monday.
