Reno, Nevada – Gusty west winds and dangerously low humidity will bring a brief but serious fire risk across western Nevada Wednesday afternoon, threatening areas from the Sierra Front through the Basin & Range.
According to the National Weather Service in Reno, wind gusts between 25 and 35 mph are expected, with minimum humidity plummeting as low as 7 to 12 percent. These critical fire weather conditions could peak by late Wednesday, impacting Reno, Carson City, Gardnerville, Fallon, and the Wadsworth region.
Officials warn residents to avoid all activities that could create sparks, including yard work, campfires, and outdoor machinery. Even a single stray ember could ignite fast-spreading wildfires, especially along US-395, I-80, and NV-445. Local fire agencies are on high alert, urging people to secure loose outdoor items and avoid non-essential travel in high-risk areas.
Wednesday’s fire danger mirrors similar events from recent summers, when rapid wind shifts and dry conditions fueled fast-moving fires. Residents are advised to charge mobile devices, have evacuation plans ready, and monitor alerts from the Nevada Department of Emergency Management.
Fire weather warnings remain in effect through Wednesday evening. Further advisories are possible if gusty winds persist or humidity drops again.
