Reno, Nevada – A magnitude 4.1 earthquake struck northeast of Valmy early Tuesday, briefly shaking parts of Humboldt County and neighboring rural areas without immediate reports of damage or injuries.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake occurred at 5:35 a.m. PDT about 57 kilometers northeast of Valmy at a depth of 7.6 kilometers. The Nevada Seismological Laboratory reviewed and confirmed the event, classifying its intensity at level IV — “light” shaking that may be felt indoors but rarely causes structural damage.
Communities near Battle Mountain and Carlin reported light tremors, with four citizen responses logged so far. No disruptions to utilities or infrastructure were reported by local authorities. The ShakeMap indicates the strongest shaking was confined to sparsely populated zones in northern Nevada.
While the USGS placed the chance of a larger aftershock above magnitude 4 at only 7%, residents are advised to remain alert for minor seismic activity over the next week. Emergency officials recommend securing heavy furniture and reviewing earthquake safety procedures, especially in remote and mobile home communities.
No additional alerts have been issued, but the Nevada Seismological Laboratory continues to monitor the region for further seismic movement.
