Gerlach, Nevada – A small but noticeable earthquake struck a remote stretch of northern Nevada earlier today, briefly rattling areas northwest of Gerlach and drawing attention from residents across parts of Washoe County.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the magnitude 3.6 earthquake occurred about 30 kilometers northwest of Gerlach at a shallow depth of roughly 2.6 kilometers. The quake was automatically reviewed and classified, indicating reliable initial data with no immediate concerns for structural damage.

Shaking was strongest near the epicenter in sparsely populated desert terrain near the Pyramid Lake region, where residents may have felt a quick jolt or light vibration. In Gerlach and surrounding rural communities, reports suggest the shaking was brief and mild. Farther south, including the Reno-Sparks area, impacts were minimal, with no confirmed damage or injuries.

Local emergency managers did not issue alerts or closures following the quake. Transportation corridors such as State Route 447 remained open, and utilities reported no disruptions. Seismologists note that shallow earthquakes of this size are common in northern Nevada and often serve as reminders of the region’s active geology.

Officials encourage residents who felt the shaking to submit reports to the USGS, which helps improve seismic monitoring. No aftershocks or additional advisories were reported immediately following the event, though minor seismic activity can continue without notice.
