Valmy, NV – A series of small earthquakes jolted northern Nevada near Valmy on Monday morning, with the strongest reaching magnitude 4.0.

According to the Nevada Seismological Laboratory, the seismic activity began just after 5 a.m. local time on March 31, with a 3.4 magnitude quake occurring at 5:03 a.m. Over the next few hours, three additional tremors followed—magnitudes 2.6, 2.9, and the strongest, a 4.0 event at 9:28 a.m., located approximately 57 km northeast of Valmy. Depths ranged between 6.2 and 11.1 kilometers.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported minimal shaking intensity and no damage, though one person submitted a “Did You Feel It?” response for the M4.0 quake. The intensity map classified the event as level VI on the Community Internet Intensity scale, indicating light to moderate shaking.

Officials noted a 27% chance of an M3+ aftershock within the week, but lower probabilities for stronger quakes. No alerts were issued for structural risk or evacuations.

Residents are encouraged to secure heavy furniture, review earthquake readiness kits, and follow updates from local emergency management. Earthquakes of this magnitude are not uncommon in the seismically active Great Basin region.
