Schurz, Nev. – A magnitude 2.8 earthquake was recorded early Monday about 10 kilometers southeast of Schurz, shaking parts of Mineral County in western Nevada. The tremor struck at 2:45 a.m. local time at a depth of roughly 13 kilometers, according to the Nevada Seismological Laboratory.

The quake was considered minor, with no immediate reports of damage or injuries. Still, residents in nearby communities, including Yerington and Hawthorne, may have felt light shaking. Authorities note that earthquakes of this size are common in the region, which sits along several active fault lines extending toward the California border.

Emergency officials advise residents to review earthquake safety steps, including securing heavy furniture, checking emergency kits, and knowing safe spots indoors in case of stronger aftershocks. While no aftershocks have been confirmed yet, small quakes in western Nevada can occasionally cluster.

The Nevada Seismological Laboratory continues to monitor the area and encourages residents to report any shaking they experienced through its online “Did You Feel It?” system.
