Reno, Nevada – A major heatwave is pushing temperatures into the triple digits across western Nevada, with highs near 105°F expected in Reno, Carson City, and the Surprise Valley region through 11 a.m. Wednesday. The Reno International Airport hit 101°F yesterday, marking the city’s first 100-degree day this year — and the mercury is rising even higher today.
According to the National Weather Service, a Heat Advisory remains in effect for western Nevada, including the Reno-Carson-Minden area and Surprise Valley in California. The advisory warns of a major risk for heat-related illness, especially for those without adequate cooling or hydration. Daytime highs will soar between 95° and 105°F, with overnight lows barely dropping below 70°F — offering little relief for residents.
Local roads, including I-80, US-395, and US-50, could see increased vehicle breakdowns and accidents as engines and tires are pushed to their limits. Schools, outdoor workers, and vulnerable populations should take extra precautions. Officials urge everyone to limit outdoor activity between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m., use air conditioning or cooling centers, wear light clothing, and check on elderly neighbors or those without air conditioning.
Stay hydrated and avoid strenuous outdoor work during the hottest hours. This is western Nevada’s most intense heat spell so far this summer, with conditions similar to the July 2021 heat dome.
The Heat Advisory remains in effect until 11 a.m. Wednesday, with more alerts possible if high temperatures persist.
