Reno, NV – A High Wind Watch will take effect late Saturday night, with dangerous gusts up to 65 mph forecasted through Sunday evening. Travelers on U.S. 395 and residents in the Reno-Carson area should prepare for challenging conditions, including power outages and downed trees.

According to the National Weather Service, strong southwest winds will intensify overnight Saturday and persist throughout Sunday, impacting Mineral and Lyon counties, including Sparks, Gardnerville, and Virginia City. Ridge gusts could reach up to 130 mph, creating hazardous conditions for high-profile vehicles and potentially disrupting holiday plans.

Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, such as patio furniture and holiday decorations, to avoid property damage. Officials recommend having flashlights, batteries, and extra water available in case of outages.

Sunday’s high in Reno is forecasted to reach 53°F, with wind speeds between 25 and 35 mph. The week ahead will see calmer conditions, with mostly sunny skies Monday through Thursday and highs in the mid-40s. New Year’s Day is expected to be partly sunny with a high of 49°F.
