Chanute, Kan. – Rising waters along the Neosho River could trigger flooding in Neosho and Allen counties late Thursday into Friday, with agricultural fields and low-lying areas most at risk.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, the river near Chanute is expected to exceed its 23-foot flood stage late Thursday evening, cresting near 23.8 feet by early Friday morning. At that level, the right bank overflows and agricultural flooding are expected before waters begin receding below flood stage later Friday morning.
By Wednesday afternoon, the river measured 8.6 feet, well below flood stage, but forecasters warn the rapid rise could create dangerous conditions. Residents in Chanute, Iola, and surrounding communities should avoid driving on flooded roads. Nearly two feet of moving water can sweep away vehicles.
Officials advise residents to prepare by charging devices, monitoring weather updates, and planning alternate routes. Floodwaters may impact rural roads, farmland, and low-lying areas along the river.
The Flood Warning remains in effect until 8:23 p.m. Friday. The next update from the National Weather Service is due early Thursday morning at 1:45 a.m.
