Cheyenne, Wyoming – Storms capable of strong winds, heavy rain, and large hail could impact drivers and residents in Cheyenne and southeast Wyoming by Thursday afternoon, raising concerns for flash flooding and hazardous travel.

According to the US National Weather Service in Cheyenne, a surge of monsoon moisture is fueling the risk of scattered severe storms across southeast Wyoming and western Nebraska through Thursday night. Isolated storms may bring damaging winds, frequent lightning, and downpours heavy enough to cause rapid street flooding, especially in low-lying areas. Morning low clouds could briefly limit storm development, but conditions are expected to destabilize as the day progresses.

Communities from Cheyenne to Torrington, as well as western Nebraska towns like Scottsbluff, should be alert for sudden changes in weather—especially after 2 p.m. Interstate 80 and other major routes may see ponding water or reduced visibility in downpours. School districts and commuters are urged to review safety plans and avoid travel during periods of severe weather.

Preparedness tips include charging cell phones, securing outdoor objects, and monitoring local alerts. Thursday’s system marks one of the stronger summer events for the region, with threats similar to storms seen earlier this July.

The severe threat will gradually diminish late Thursday evening, but more advisories are possible if monsoonal moisture lingers into Friday.
