Columbus, Nebraska – Heavy snow and 35 mph wind gusts will continue to reduce visibility and create slick roads across Boone and Platte counties through midnight CST Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until midnight. An additional 2 to 4 inches of snow is expected, with gusty winds causing blowing and drifting snow across open areas.
Visibility may drop to near whiteout at times.
Road conditions along U.S. Highway 30, U.S. Highway 81, and Nebraska Highway 14 are deteriorating as fresh snow accumulates and winds push drifts across lanes. The Nebraska Department of Transportation warns the Thursday evening commute will remain hazardous, especially in rural stretches between Columbus, Albion, and St. Edward.
Slippery pavement and sudden visibility drops increase crash risk.
Residents should delay nonessential travel and check Nebraska 511 for the latest road conditions. If you must drive, carry emergency supplies including water, food, and a flashlight.
Snow and wind will gradually diminish toward midnight, but drifting may persist into the overnight hours. The Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for Boone and Platte counties until midnight CST tonight.
