Omaha, NE – A powerful wind advisory has been issued across northeast Nebraska and northwest Iowa for Thursday, prompting caution for drivers and raising fire danger concerns.
According to the US National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, strong westerly winds are expected to reach sustained speeds of 25 to 35 mph, with gusts peaking up to 45 mph between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. Thursday. The advisory is in effect throughout much of the northeastern portion of Nebraska and bordering areas of northwest Iowa.
Forecasters warned that the high winds could create dangerous conditions for high-profile vehicles, especially on open highways, and may result in flying debris. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items and remain alert for any rapid fire spread risk in dry areas.
The National Weather Service emphasized the risk of wildfires as gusty winds and dry conditions combine, particularly in rural zones with brush or grassland. No burn permits are being issued during the advisory window, and residents are advised to avoid outdoor activities involving open flames or sparks.
Travelers across U.S. Highways 20, 75, and 81, as well as Interstates 29 and 80, are advised to proceed with caution and check for updates throughout the day.
Emergency management teams are monitoring conditions closely and recommend that the public stay informed through official weather alerts and local media updates.
