Omaha, NE – A quick-hitting winter storm is bringing significant precipitation across Nebraska today, with rain transitioning to snow by evening. Drivers on I-80 and US-20 should prepare for slick conditions, especially in northeast Nebraska, where snow accumulation of up to 4 inches is possible.

According to the National Weather Service Omaha/Valley, the rain-snow switchover is expected between 3 and 6 p.m. in northeast areas, and closer to 8-10 p.m. along the I-80 corridor. If the transition occurs earlier, accumulation on roads may increase, with localized snowfall of 3 to 4 inches primarily north of US-20. However, warmer ground temperatures could limit accumulations if the changeover happens later.

Precipitation is expected to taper off by midnight, with light flurries lingering before clearing by Tuesday morning. Temperatures will drop to 27°F tonight, leading to potential icy conditions during the early morning commute. Residents and drivers are urged to monitor the latest updates and take precautions when traveling.

Looking ahead, New Year’s Eve (Tuesday) will bring sunny skies and a high of 32°F, with winds up to 28 mph keeping conditions brisk. The remainder of the week features mostly clear skies and lows dropping to 12°F by Thursday night. Light snow could return late Wednesday or early Thursday, but accumulation is not anticipated.
