Broken Bow, Neb. – Cold air funnels spotted over central Nebraska had residents glancing skyward Monday afternoon, though forecasters say the unusual sight is no cause for alarm. The brief, rope-like funnels, reported in Custer, Blaine, Loup, Garfield and Wheeler counties, are expected to dissipate by 7 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in North Platte, these funnels form in cool, unstable air and are not tied to thunderstorms. They rarely reach the ground, and when they do, impacts are minimal and short-lived. Local reports came in from areas including Dunning, Burwell, Bartlett, Ericson and Broken Bow.
Drivers and outdoor workers are advised to remain alert in case any funnel briefly touches down. While these events are generally harmless, NWS notes that sudden, gusty winds can accompany them.
The statement urges residents to stay aware but not alarmed. More settled skies are expected by evening, with no additional severe weather anticipated overnight.
